About a 10 minute drive out of hay you will find the beautiful scenery of the Black Mountains and Hay bluff, with epic views.


Hay-on-Wye’s location in the Brecon Beacons makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions. Just a short drive away, you’ll find the stunning scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park, known for its majestic mountains, rolling hills, and rich flora and fauna.


Hike to Pen y Fan, the highest peak for breathtaking views that are worth the climb. With various walking trails available, there’s something for every skill level. Alternatively, indulge in a leisurely picnic on one of the park’s many lawns while surrounded by nature.

Tomatitoes - low key Spanish restaurant the food is made from the best ingredients sourced locally from the wonderful profusion of growers and makers on the Welsh borders, from artisan bread to the best seasonal veg. Their wines and beers are, of course, largely sourced from Spain .

Kates Bakery - Worth the trip alone, a visit to Kate’s bakery never disappoints, on a Saturday morning she sells the most incredible home made bread and pastries from a little hatch on 18 Lion St. Its worth stopping and stocking up on pastries for your visit. Although she does sell out pretty quickly so best to get there early if you can!

Café at Hay Castle Hay Castle Café is situated on the ground floor of the castle. With large windows that overlook the lawn and flood the café with natural light, offering a light and airy space to enjoy brunch, light lunches, cakes and snacks. In the summer you can enjoy your food or drink out on the terrace or purchase an ice cream to take out to the deck chairs on the lawn.


No trip to Hay is complete without a visit to Shepherds, famous for its delicious sheep’s milk ice cream.


If you’re visiting on a Thursday or a Saturday, be sure to check out the Hay Market. Here, you will find fresh local produce, artisan products, and unique crafts. It’s a wonderful way to experience community spirit while tasting the flavors of the region.

You can find everything from gourmet cheese to homemade jams, and come home with one off pieces from the many antiques or bric a brac shops dotted around the town, making it the perfect place to pick up souvenirs or picnic supplies.

When you need a break from exploring, Hay-on-Wye has several parks where you can relax and unwind. The Castle Grounds offers a large green lawn to relax on, and there’s always the Warren a short walk from town which is a perfect spot to enjoy a picnic by the river.
