Exploring the studio and home of Artist Nick Holmes

Our journey with Nick Holmes began almost ten years ago when Nick and his wife, Helen, commissioned Paul to design and build a greenhouse for their home. From that initial meeting to today we are fortunate to count Nick and Helen as our friends. We’re proud to display some of Nick’s extraordinary artworks in our cabin and Lean-to, infusing our spaces with Nick’s creative energy and vision.

Nick Holmes is a contemporary artist with a practice deeply rooted in blending the influences of art history, popular culture, and his personal experiences. With a rich educational background in fine art and film studies, he brings a depth of knowledge and skill to his work.

Nick’s process often begins with images projected onto canvas using overhead transparencies, onto which he layers acrylics and emulsions. This technique results in richly textured and dynamic works that convey both precision and spontaneity.

You can spot Nicks Paintings in both the cabin and the Lean-to.

In addition to his paintings, Nick creates experimental collages and constructions. These pieces reflect his willingness to push the boundaries of traditional forms, offering viewers fresh perspectives and multidimensional narratives.

Nick’s art captivates us in many ways. For me some of his colourful, bold works often echo the essence of Patrick Caulfield and Philip Guston, blending sharp commentary with linear forms.

His use of colour is compelling, with vibrant hues and intricate compositions that draw viewers into stories and themes that linger in the mind. The subject matter he explores—from everyday life to broader cultural and historical narratives—reflects both depth and a playful edge, making his pieces uniquely engaging.

One of the highlights of the year for us is the h.Art Festival when Nick and Helen open their picturesque home just outside Pembridge to the public. Their charming house provides the perfect backdrop to experience Nick’s work. Visitors not only have the opportunity to admire his latest creations but also to step inside his studio—a place of inspiration and creativity. It’s an opportunity to witness where his ideas come to life, adding a personal dimension to the pieces on display.

Celebrated Works and Exhibitions

Nick’s portfolio is vast, with notable pieces like "Usual Myths" (2020) and "The Former MP" (2024) highlighting his versatility and thematic range. His work has been featured in prestigious exhibitions, including the Columbia Threadneedle Prize and the Royal Society of British Artists’ shows, cementing his reputation as an artist of insight and innovation.

Nick has been part of the Turps Banana Mentoring Programme (2021–2024), which underscores his dedication to evolving his practice. His 2024 exhibition lineup includes "Telling Tales" at the Chapel Gallery in Bromyard and the Royal West Academy Friends’ Open in Bristol, showcasing his enduring relevance and creativity.
